MAY 6, 2006 -- Greenwood, South Carolina -- SimplePC, a leading computer repair company and pioneer of local high-speed Internet access for Greater Greenwood, today announced that it has completed the spin off of its Internet and telecommunications segment of operation into a new company. The spin-off company, named SCTEL, will focus on expanding the current serving area for DSL, as well as introducing new offerings, such as local telephone service, including unlimited long distance packages. The spin-off will allow for each company to focus on their strengths, improving quality of service and efficiency, while offering residents a competitive alternative.
SimplePC was established in 1997, and its Internet segment has grown significantly; amongst thousands of residents with SimplePC Internet service, its vast commercial base includes companies such as The Index Journal, Grand Harbor, Connie Maxwell, and Greenwood County. SimplePC acquired Emerald Internet Services in 2005.
As next-generation services such as IP telephony (VoIP) evolve, SCTEL sees an opportunity to bring this technology to Greenwood, allowing residents and businesses to take advantage of a wealth of features with less expense. For the past year, SCTEL's main focus has been on fine-tuning its commercial telephone and T-1 services, prior to the introduction of residential telephone services in Greenwood, expected in May.
SCTEL's commercial services include telephone, Internet, dedicated T-1, web hosting, and colocation. Organizations that take advantage of SCTEL's Hosted IP PBX telephone service receive more features than legacy (older) telephone equipment, while taking advantage of lower monthly costs for service. The service integrates both voice and data, called convergence, and enables SCTEL to deploy service to an organization with multiple locations, such as branch offices, and still provide 4-digit extensions. Service starts at $24.95.
For home users, SCTEL also has plans to offer telephone and improve its Internet services. Residential telephone services are being introduced in May and will start at $14.99, including 500 minutes of long distance. Unlimited long distance is available for $10.00 more. Dial-Up Internet is now offered nation-wide, and plans to expand local DSL coverage are underway.
"IP telephony has been recognized as the replacement for legacy, analog services," said James A. Kennemore, Jr., President of Kennemore Holdings, SCTEL's parent company. "Through convergence, users benefit not only from the enhancements to the service, but also the lower cost, from which we're seeing an incredible demand. We are making significant investments to improve and expand our Internet and telephony infrastructure to meet this demand."
A new telephone prefix, 889, is now local for Greenwood subscribers of SCTEL telephone service. SCTEL has local service available throughout most of South Carolina.
Residential subscriptions to SCTEL service will be handled on-line at www.sctel.com, or at SimplePC's retail location at 101 Grace Street. Commercial services will be handled through regional sales staff. Call (864) 889-9999 for more information.
